Wine Tasting

Ever wondered why wine tasters hold the glass up to the light, stick their nose in the glass, swirl the wine in the glass, sip and swish the wine in their mouths, and then after all of that, spit it out?  There really is a reason that goes beyond just being a wine snob.  Seems they are checking for clarity, smelling the wine (which enhances the taste), and letting their taste buds enjoy the flavor.  But there is still no reason to spit it out!  I like to go wine tasting, but unless the wine is gross, if it goes in my mouth, I am swallowing!

You can learn to taste wine if you do not know how to do so already. All it takes is some practice. And you don't need to be able to impress anyone with your knowledge, all you need to do is listen to your own taste buds. After all, drinking wine is all about pleasing your palate, not someone else's.

One of the funnest ways to learn about wine is to have a tasting party.  Gather some of your friends together, buy a few bottles of wine, and try them all. To cut down on the cost to you, have each person bring a bottle, preferably something they have never tried before. As a host or hostess, you could supply the wine glasses and set out some cheese and crackers to help clear the palate between tastes. Setting food out also helps people to see how the taste of a wine can change when it is drank alone and when it is paired with food.  Wine is made to be consumed with food, not only does it set an atmosphere, food helps to bring out the subtle tastes of the wine.

Vineyards

What impact does the vineyard have on the wines? Quite a bit actually. The quality of the grapes can vary greatly from vineyard to vineyard, even vineyards owned and operated by the same winemaker. The drainage, available sunlight as well as the quality of the sunlight, soil type and even the age of the vines all have an impact on the grapes that are produced there. There are several places you can learn about wine making and the impact that a vineyard will have on a wine.
